Are you a practicum student ready to grow?

About

Our practicum program is designed to allow you to hit your required hours, gain knowledge and experience, and to help you feel ready to join this profession with confidence. We're big on transparency, so there's a lot of reading below. Make sure to read carefully prior to applying.

Requirements

As we are still a growing practice, we are only considering practicum students who have some training outside their Master's program or an interest in working with specific populations (a niche). This training could look like additional certifications or courses in trauma, specific modalities, or specific conditions. The training does not need to be extensive given you're just starting out, but even a course or two is a huge asset!

If you meet most of the following requirements, but not all - you are still encouraged to apply!

  • Registration with the CRPO (be sure to start this process ASAP once you've completed 90% of your course load).
  • Training with specific populations or conditions (Ex: LGBTQ+, OCD, BPD, Couples Counselling).
  • Interest in working with specific populations or conditions (beyond common issues such as depression, anxiety, self-esteem, etc.)
  • Highly independent and a self-starter (While we will provide you with a TON of support, we are also focused on setting you up for success after your practicum).
  • Able to see clients a minimum of 12 hours per week.
  • At least 25-30 hours of availability (A good rule of thumb is to have double the amount of availability vs. how many clients you want to see a week while you're actively seeking new clients).
  • Available during the evenings (this tends to be the most popular time that clients request)
  • Availability on weekends is a PLUS, but not required.
  • Excellent command of the English Language.
  • An external supervisor that is approved by your school. (We can help support you in finding one).

  • While we are responsible for finding you clients, you will be invited to engage in your own marketing to help set you up for success once you've finished practicum. This includes: monitoring and posting in therapist referral groups on Facebook, creating social media posts, and updating your Psychology Today pages. (We will help and train you in this!)

What we offer

We hope to offer a unique and rewarding experience that separates us from other potential practicum sites!

  • Ability to complete your practicum remotely
  • Free access to our booking and video system (Jane App), along with your own email and Google Drive.
  • Free marketing (Ads, Psychology Today)
  • Intimate, small cohort of students so you can get the support you need.
  • Weekly peer support meetings and trainings.
  • Possibility of continuing with Kaizen Therapy as a contractor (starting at a 70/30 split rate part-time, 80/20 full-time!) once you've completed your practicum.
  • No shady contracts. If you choose to leave Kaizen Therapy at the end of your practicum, it will be assumed your clients will be going with you!
  • Two weeks vacation (optional, if your school and hours allow it).
  • An honorarium paid out to you at the end of your practicum to help recover supervision and training costs.
  • Helping to set you up for success post-practicum (navigating contracts, employment offers, or building your own practice!)

Next Steps

.We are currently accepting applications for January 2026. Our application process is as follows:

  1. You apply using the form below. (Attach your resume and include a brief cover letter in the "Message" section of the form).
  2. If your application is considered, you will be invited to an interview (50–75 minutes).
  3. Prior to the interview, you will be sent a questionnaire that will provide us more information about your background, your experience, and what sort of therapist you hope to be. This questionnaire will also help prepare you for the interview itself, as the interview questions asked will be similar or build on what was asked in the questionnaire.
  4. We may ask you to do a brief role play as the therapist during this interview.
  5. We will let you know within 1 week of your interview whether you've been accepted.
  6. If you're accepted, you will then need to sign an offer letter and contract, which you can then provide to your school as proof of internship.
  7. 2-4 weeks before your practicum begins, you will be expected to create your website bio, psychology today profile, and take some headshots. On our end, we will begin marketing, so you will hopefully have some clients waiting for you on day one! We will also host an orientation shortly before your start date!

Common Anxieties

Since we're big on transparency, let's talk about the potential challenge you might face during practicum: getting hours.

  • It's perfectly normal to have zero clients in your first 4-6 weeks. This is a great chance to do some trainings, get to know your supervisor, get ahead in your course work.
  • You might not hit 12 client hours a week until mid-way through your practicum (that's okay!)

If you're struggling to get hours, here's what will happen:

  • We will allow you to offer pro bono sessions to clients. (With boosted marketing!)
  • We will offer you co-counselling opportunities with our senior therapists.
  • You can join your school's extension group (if offered by your school) and we will continue to support you beyond the typical 8 months of practicum until you get all your hours.
  • We are also happy to allow you to find a second practicum site for your second term (or earlier in serious cases).
